He was born in Wabash County, Ind., July 29, 1844. He availed himself of the opportunities of the common school and afterward attended Union College, Schenectady, N.Y. where at the age of twenty-one he graduated. He at once entered the law office of the Hon. John U. Pettit for a term of three years. The conditions of his connection with the office were: the first year he was to be a student only, the second year both student and clerk, and the third year a partner in the business. The terms of this agreement were carried out. From the spring of 1865 to the fall of 1868, he filled the office of School examiner of Wabash County. In the spring of 1868 he was elected Mayor of the city of wabash, and held the office eight years, at the same time acctively engaged in the practice of his profession in Wabash and adjacent counties.

He was married January 8, 1865 to Miss Martha Jane Bronk, of Albany, N.Y. He has had four children, two of whom are still living.

In 1880 he was elected State Senator from Wabash and Kosciusko Counties. Since 1878, he has been associated in business with Jesse T. Hutchens, and possesses a large and lucrative practice. Mr. Sayre is regarded as one of the most efficient political manageres in his district. He knows no fear in his adherance to what he believes to be correct principle and has no hesitancy in denouncing what he considers wrong in his own or the opposing party. As an individual he is willing to stand or fall on his own merits. He is in the prime of life, and, if inherited longevity counts for anything, he has a long life before him in which to be useful to community and to achive success.
