Are iconic characters intended for new characters? Should i try IC or a regular one? (2024)

So I have to the game after a couple of years.
To be frank, I forgot how the game plays, I mean the systems and other things, etc.
I want to create a new character and start my experience with a brand new character.
IC sounds cool but it could be overwhelming.
Thanks for the info,
Cheers,

Welcome back Seweryn,
Imo the lower lvl quests are easier to learn from than the later ones. Especially since the levelling will happen in steps and so you'll gain a better understanding how to build a character.
But you can make yourself an iconic and still start from scratch. You'll have all the experience to lvl 15 already but you don't need to level up to 15 all at once.
Because I am certain that when you jump back into the game and don't know it lvl 15 will be overwhelming and you have to carry that character to 30, it won't be fun.

Cheers,
Titus.

Welcome back. I recently came back a few months ago. I would recommend shaking the dust off at level 1 and relearning the game from the ground up.
Iconics are pretty cool, but the starter gear leaves stuff to be desired for survivability and you'll spend most of your time farming lower end stuff to catch up to the tetris race, especially if you're not sure what you need and where it is. Starting from the ground up lets you gather as you level.
If you're on cannith, then pm me here and I'll be happy to lend a hand.

I'll parrot everyone and say you're probably better off starting at level 1 (or 4 or 7, if you have Veteran Status)
For one, the lower level quests will get you reacquainted with the whole system without putting you through too much danger.
Two, Iconics start out with subpar equipment compared to today's standards, so you'd be in higher level quests, doing more dangerous stuff, while probably being worse than if you had reached that point yourself.

Welcome back, OP.

Even though I have a newbie Iconics thread on the old forums, I would say Iconic characters were originally intended for experienced players who wanted to leap into mid-teens heroic content. Remember that Iconic Heroes were first added when the second expansion (Shadowfell Conspiracy) came out; so they started at just the right level for hopping into the Wheloon quests.

Iconic starter gear is incredibly basic and needs to be upgraded ASAP if you want to run harder content on a first-lifer. Plus higher-level quests presume you, the player, are already familiar with how to play DDO and doesn't provide the tutorials you get from Korthos Island.

Nowadays people who run Iconics are probably either on the ITR Train or exploiting specific racial bonuses (e.g., SDK chain attacks).

Thanks for the clarification.

Overall, thanks for the help all.
I will probably go with yours recommendation and create a new lvl 1 character.
Thanks again.

Sure, but with some caveats, pretty much what everyone has already said. However, I'll add that there are some considerations to whip up an Iconic.

Starting at 15 lets you crush under-level content, and (re?)acquaint yourself w quests and game mechanics. AND it gives you an instant powerhouse to farm lower-level quests for named gear for your main (assuming you have a

Shared Bank

for BtA items!). You just have to understand and accept that unless you want to go to 30, this is either a farming alt or a disposable one - which is fine, it just won't be your "main" otherwise.

And while the starter gear is indeed "incredibly basic" by current standards, it's still better than most RNG dropgear, and decent dropgear is adequate for Elite - so while you won't be crushing it (at level), you'll be good 'nuff, and will find stuff dropping that will be an improvement.

What Iconics do you have access to? (Some are stronger "out of the box" than others, depending.)

There's no problem starting with an Iconic Character if you play on Normal difficulties. The gear will be appropriate to the difficulty level and the character power will be appropriate. It'll just be a question of getting your legs under you in terms of movement in combat and spellcasting.

Also, you may have to farm out favour for bank and back pack space.

This is only my opinion, but one of the things ddo acutally did well early on was build the skills as you went through the quests. Do a 1-20 lives as a refesher of how the game works (learning how the new content since you've been gone works), then swap to iconics to grind out a bunch of class lives (if you want them) after that refresher. But it's just a suggestion, it's your game experience, go wild however you want to. Are iconic characters intended for new characters? Should i try IC or a regular one? (7)

An Iconic can only do Reincarnation at Level 30, which might(?) be a bit of a slog for a new player - ymmv.

But what an Iconic is good for, for new players, is exactly what you need - to test out how a build might work. It won't have the best gear (default gear is meh, at best), but you can instantly create a Level 15 and then romp around lower level quests to get a feel for how the combat UI works and feels. (With the first class locked, it ~might~ not be exactly the build you want - but a Paladin 1/Sorcerer 14 is still gonna play like a "Sorcerer".)

Once it's served its purpose, either delete or retire to Mule duty.

..and the pre-build route is disgraceful... 'followed my path' ... I could build a better toon.

Iconics are not intended for new players in my opinion. If you have experience in game play and building, and most important, gear, iconics can be very good.
