This love potion co*cktail recipe was first published on 2nd February 2023.

Two drink recipes in a row! I am on a roll and couldn’t miss a chance to share this easy love potion co*cktail recipe for Valentine’s day. Last year we shared 50+ vegan Valentine’s dinner recipes, but we wanted to add some new recipes this year too.

After last week’s big hit at our house with the sparkling grapefruit mocktail, blueberry gin and lavender lemonade co*cktail, I thought I had to try my hand at a co*cktail recipe too. As I said I am not a huge drinker, but on the days when I went out to drink, white wine and vodka co*cktails were my jam. This love potion co*cktail is all about fruity flavours and vodka mixed, a chef’s kiss, or I must say bartender’s kiss!

Puns aside, this easy vodka co*cktail was the perfect balance of liquor and juices. It wasn’t too sweet or too strong on the vodka, which made it easy to drink. Assured by my dad who had two glasses on his own! And I love a recipe that takes only five minutes to whip up because, let’s admit it, we don’t have so much time to prep everything!

What is a love potion co*cktail?

We are not talking about the love potions in the movies or books. But we very well might be if yous serve this for date night! This delicious love potion drink has a base of vodka and different juices.

A love potion drink is a mix of grapefruit juice, cranberry juice and orange juice. Although, you can find plenty of different versions of this Valentine’s day drink like one with peach schnapps, or flavoured vodka, or grenadine. Also with sweetened lime juice or dry ice or ice cream too. You read that right! What makes a love potion vodka co*cktail best than your personal touch?

What ingredients do I need for this love potion co*cktail?

The love potion co*cktail ingredients you will need are few and easy to find. So get ready with your co*cktail shaker and add these to your next grocery shop run:

  • cranberry juice: first off you will need cranberry juice which will give a bright and tart taste to your co*cktail;
  • orange juice: this will brighten up your co*cktail and will blend well with the other flavours;
  • grapefruit juice: it will add a bit of bitterness to the drink;
  • lime juice: adding more tartness and a hint of sweetness to the love potion;
  • vodka: any kind you have at home will be fine, I am not here to judge anyone that love a flavoured one here. Just make sure to balance it out in case. You will find a lot of recipes asking for raspberry vodka, peach vodka or even making it a love potion co*cktail gin or with rum. You can also easily swap it for alcohol free vodka and make it a mocktail;
  • sparkling water: simple sparkling water will give a frizz to your drink, but you could swap it for any type of sodas, sprite or even add some prosecco to it;
  • ice: simple ice cubes, unless you love to go the extra mile and add some rosemary or fresh cranberries before putting them in the freezer;
  • sugar & juice: these will serve you to create a sugar rim. You could also use food colouring, but in that case I would go for something that adds contrast instead of red on red, like white or black;
  • rosemary sprigs: these will be great as a garnish, just propped on the side or in the ice. But you could also omit it and go for another kind of garnish like fresh cranberries, strawberries or orange peel.

Where can I find the ingredients for this drink?

All the ingredients for this Valentine’s day co*cktail are easy to find. I avoided using things you might not find easily like grenadine or dry ice. But for the rest, you can find vodka and juices at any shop or supermarket around. And if you prefer freshly squeezed you can usually find the fruits at any shop nowadays.

Can I make this drink in advance?

Absolutely you can! I enjoy having a recipe you can make in advance and big batches. Because let’s say it, if you don’t celebrate Valentine’s day, like me, you don’t have to pass on this at all!

It’s the perfect vodka co*cktail to make in big batches for a party or to mix last minute for your guests, or date night. Or for yourself after a long, because treat yourself! You can refrigerate your drink for up to three days.

Can I substitute anything in this love potion drink?

I mentioned before that this love potion co*cktail with vodka has plenty of alternatives. So substitutes are more than welcome! What you always have to look out for is balance. If you prefer a flavoured vodka or a different liquor try your hand at it. I think something like a sweet tequila might work well with the red fruit juices. Or gin too.

As for the juices, I wouldn’t substitute them as they might change the co*cktail. But if you prefer to omit one and add more of another, it will need rebalancing. Rimming glasses are optional, I just think they add a nice touch to it as well as having a first sweet impact before the alcohol which I enjoy.

Can I make this drink even after Valentine’s Day?

As I already mentioned I am not one to celebrate Valentine’s day much, so I had to make a versatile drink. Although you might think the colour screams Valentine’s celebration, this co*cktail is perfect all year round.

You can still rim your glasses with just white sugar or change the garnish. It sounds like a refreshing option to have at the swimming pool or at the seaside too. Or even during Christmas celebrations!

Can I make this love potion drink without vodka?

You can make this without vodka and make it a delicious mocktail recipe too! As I mentioned last week, mocktails have the same flavoursome ingredients as a traditional co*cktail just without the alcohol. All the same, they will still be delicious!

You can find alcohol free vodka almost everywhere nowadays, and they still bring a lot of flavour to your drinks. If you are on the lookout for a delicious mocktail, you should check out our grapefruit rosemary mocktail recipe for sure!

Can I serve this drink with something else instead of rosemary as a garnish?

You can indeed! If I have to be honest when getting ingredients I couldn’t find the right red berries to go with them, so I went with plan B. Which consisted of homegrown rosemary from the garden, smells amazing and always looks great as garnish!

But if you want a Valentine’s day drink that screams more love, you can garnish it with red berries. Anything from raspberries to fresh cranberries set on a co*cktail stick will look well.

Or you can use strawberries, I have seen everyone using strawberry hearts and they look amazing (check how to cut them here)! I have also seen people using the orange rind to make hearts and kudos for using the whole fruit!

This is the Valentine’s drink for you if you are ready to mesmerize your partner for Valentine’s day with a refreshing co*cktail. Or if you are after an easy co*cktail to mix and make in batches for your dinner guests with easy-to-find ingredients. Let’s check out how to make this easy love potion drink recipe!

  • You can store the co*cktail mix in the fridge and serve it when you need it for your parties or waiting for your partner.
  • You can use different garnishes too, we just opted for something that we have at home.
  • Sugar rimming the glasses can also be done with food colouring for a darker shade of red in case you want it.
